Franciscan order was responsible for commissioning the construction of this church in 1579. It became one of the oldest churches in Chile. It was located in Concepción Street, where it got its name, dedicated to the Virgin. Works ended in 1622.
In 1965, and due to the high seismic activity of the region, several serious damages, both structural and decorative, were discovered in the building. In consequence, in order to protect the church, it was declared National Monument in 1971, because of its importance, age and high architectural interest, a key for national identity. Nevertheless, the National Monument declaration only involved the tower, the atrium and one of its perimeter walls.
The 1985 earthquake wreaked havoc in the building, making it impossible to be used, because of the risk it posed for people participating in any religious activity. Therefore, in 1997 a plan to turn the church into a Cultural Center was developed by the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Chile. Central nave was rebuilt and its spaces were remodeled, applying reinforcements in its structure, to create modern design rooms.
In 2010, realizing that the National Monument declaration decree had gaps regarding coverage area, a rectification of such decree is issued by the Ministry of Education in order to set limits for protected spaces. This decree is still effective.
Subsequently, between 2010 and 2011, when the massive 2010 earthquake took place, a second refurbishment plan was developed: spaces were revamped, respecting the original architectural structure. With these works, the National Council for the Arts and Culture aimed at generating a Cultural Infrastructure Network.
Nowadays, while the church was built with a religious and spiritual purpose, this place is of a laic nature housing exclusively the Cultural Center of the commune, whose mission is “to promote local associativity through cultural and artistic heritage.”
Current parish, included in a modern architectural project, is located in the General San Martín Avenue, Colina.
